Meet the Geeks #2

What's your name?

Patrick

How long have you been playing Warhammer 40K?

I've been playing WH40K for nearly 20 years now, my first purchase was White Dwarf 171.

How did you come into contact with the GW Hobby?

I came in contact with WH40K through the PC game Space Hulk, in the box was a flyer for Games Workshop.

Which Army will you be playing during this endeavor?

I will be playing Necrons during this campaign.

Has this been a chance to acquire and/or tryout a new army?

I came up with the idea for all of this so I would have the chance to start a new army without having to feel guilty about it.

Do you have a theme connecting the army you are building?

Yes.....oh you were wondering what that was?

Which other armies do you play?

I also play Chaos Space Marines....ever since I started WH40K, other than that I do have models from every other army but I do not play them actively.

Any hints about your Special Project?

They're coming over the hill,
They've come to the attack,
They're coming in for the kill,
There's no turning back,
Invaders ... fighting,
Imvaders ... marauding.

Anything you wish to add?

I hope that the group will manage to stick together and that everyone can get the most out of their hobby during this campaign in the way they wish to experience it. And I hope that we manage to keep going next year. :D

Meet the Geeks #1

What's your name?

Jeroen

How long have you been playing Warhammer 40K?

For about 13 years now (time goes a lot faster than you think). Once you start collecting though one never really stops even if you don’t play very often.

How did you come into contact with the GW Hobby?

I joined a local gaming club that ran all sorts of fantasy games, at the time I was mostly into roleplaying and Magic the Gathering. Exposure to constant battles being fought on the tabletop with miniatures peeked my interest and the club mentality allowed me to roll into the hobby.

Which Army will you be playing during this endeavor?

I will be playing Imperial Guard.

Has this been a chance to acquire and/or tryout a new army?

Yes. I did have most of the models for my army already but I never actually played with the Imperial Guard yet. I figured this was a good moment to try them out and get some of them painted up.

Do you have a theme connecting the army you are building?
As I am used to getting my ass kicked I went with an army pick that would still allow me to feel good about losing some matches. I’ve decided to go with an army based around the Penal Legion Squad, picturing my force as basically a prisoner heavy army with some guards thrown in to keep the inmates in line. So even if I lose I’ll be doing the Emperor a favor by getting rid of some undesirables.

Which other armies do you play?

Too many. I started out in 40K with Chaos Space Marines, dedicated to Nurgle as we already had a Khorne player at the club. I also own small Tau, Tyranid, Eldar and Ork Speedfreak armies and have been working on my own Deathwing Space Marine Chapter called the Emperor’s Pride.

Any hints about your Special Project?

Anything you wish to add?

It’s been too long since I got to play some WH40K as all of us got older and time seemed to be less abundant. I actually managed to miss the entirety of 4th edition and got back into things with 5th. So I am looking forward to receiving my copy of the 6th edition rulebook and seeing what is what.
Can’t wait to start playing against the other geeks….even if I get my ass kicked I’m sure we will all enjoy ourselves. Thanks again Patrick for taking the initiative to get this thing going!

Rules and Planning

So as you can see the idea is that each month we expand our armies by 200 points in a certain order and play a game each month. Players do not have to adhere to the order exactly nor have the points actually painted but points will be awarded for people following the guidelines.

First Month: June, 2012
- Because this was the first month we decided not to set a deadline for anything as we had to go over the rules and whatnot. The plan was to play some Space Hulk. Barbecue, chat and discuss the happening of 23.VI.12.

Second Month: July, 2012
- 200 Points Painted (Total).
- At least 1 Troops and 1 HQ choice.
- 1 Game Played.

Third Month:  August, 2012
- 400 Points Painted (Total).
- Add at least 1 Troops.
- 1 Objective Marker.
- 1 Game Played.

Fourth Month:  September, 2012
- 600 Points Painted (Total).
- Add at least 1 Elite, Fast, Heavy Support or a Dedicated
  Transport choice.
- 1 Objective Marker.
- 1 Game Played.

Fifth Month:  October, 2012
- 800 Points Painted (Total).
- Add another HQ or a retinue for the first HQ choice.
- 1 Objective Marker.
- 1 Game Played.

Sixth Month:  November, 2012
- 1000 Points Painted (Total).
- Add at least a Tank, Flyer, Walker, Skimmer or a Monstrous Creature.
- 1 Game played.

Seventh Month:  December, 2012
- Christmas Battle with 8 1000 point armies?

Points:

Points will be awarded in the following manner:
Completed the Painting Assignment:            3 points
Adhered to Army composition:                   1 point
Army List with named Characters:              1 point
Completed additional assignment:               1 point
Game Played, Lost:                                    1 point
Game Played, Draw:                                  3 points
Game Played, Won                                    5 Points

Special Project:

Everybody runs the chance to be caught up in real life causing them to be unable to complete their painting assignment, not have a chance to play their game, or they just tend to lose more often than they win games.
There will be a chance for one person to make up some lost points or to simply increase their lead on the others by winning the points for the "Special Project".
This special project, which will remain a secret until the last day, can be anything as long as it reflects the 'character' of your army. An additional objective, a display model, a piece of terrain or a special conversion. All players together will select the best looking, most impressive, most original...or whatever you want to add there that caused someone to pick one of the projects. The one who gets most votes will earn another 5 points.
